MI vs RCB Highlights, IPL 2023: 3 moments that generated a buzz among fans in Match 54

MI vs RCB
MI defeated RCB comfortably at the Wankhede Stadium

The Mumbai Indians (MI) once again chased down a mammoth target in the 2023 Indian Premier League (IPL) with relative ease to secure two crucial points. The Rohit Sharma-led side defeated the Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) by six wickets at the Wankhede Stadium on Tuesday, May 9.

The five-time winners began the contest on a bright note by taking two early wickets in the powerplay. However, RCB responded strongly with a blistering counter-attack from RCB skipper Faf du Plessis and Glenn Maxwell. The overseas duo scored fifties to propel RCB to a comfortable position.

The hosts slowed the scoring rate with the help of quick wickets towards the back end. Dinesh Karthik played a handful cameo, but RCB lacked a punch to conclude the innings and ended up with 199/6 after 20 overs.

The run chase got off to a stellar start, primarily on the back of Ishan Kishan's explosive knock, taking full advantage of the powerplay. RCB bounced back with two wickets in the fifth over bowled by Wanindu Hasaranga.

The chasing side however, did not look back since the slight setback as Suryakumar Yadav and Nehal Wadhera decimated the RCB bowling unit with a 140-run partnership for the third wicket.

The home side ended up chasing down the mammoth total in 16.3 overs and are now placed third on the points table.

On that note, let's take a look at three instances that created buzz among fans during MI vs RCB clash.

#1 Virat Kohli's early dismissal to left-arm seam

The ace batter has an imperious record at the Wankhede Stadium in the IPL but endured a forgettable outing against the new ball on Tuesday. Kohli was dismissed for just one run off four deliveries by Jason Behrendoff in the first over itself.

The left-arm seamer put Kohli under pressure with some tight deliveries upfront. Kohli could not resist a wide delivery outside the off stump as he attempted a lavish expansive shot.

The end result was a thick outside edge, which was safely pouched by Ishan Kishan, who instantly began celebrating. However, the umpire did not raise his finger, which prompted skipper Rohit Sharma to take a review. The replays showed a thick outside edge, sealing Kohli's departure.

#2 Vishnu Vinod's juggling effort to dismiss Faf du Plessis

A key moment in the contest came in the form of Faf du Plessis' untimely dismissal from RCB's point of view. RCB were stable at one stage after notching 146 runs in 14 overs.

However, the RCB skipper's dismissal slowed down the scoring rate and they even failed to touch the 200-run mark as the middle-order failed to fire yet again.

Speaking of the wicket, du Plessis attempted an unorthodox shot off Cameron Green's first delivery. The opening batter did not get a decent connection, leading the ball to go straight to the fielder at fine leg. The substitute fielder Vishnu Vinod almost spilled the chance, but juggled the ball twice to finally get a hold of it.

#3 Wanindu Hasaranga's double-wicket over

Wanindu Hasaranga was brought into the attack in the fifth over of the innings itself after the opening batters got their team off to a blazing start. The mystery spinner was hit for 10 runs across his first three deliveries but responded strongly.

He dismissed Ishan Kishan for 42 runs off 21 deliveries after claiming an edge, which was taken by Anuj Rawat behind the stumps. In the penultimate ball of the over, the Sri Lankan tweaker trapped Rohit Sharma LBW as well.

The umpire initially did not give a verdict in favor of RCB, which prompted du Plessis to go for a review. While it seemed like Rohit stepped well down the track, the DRS showed impact in line and contrary to the replays, it comfortably went on to hit the wickets as well, leaving the MI skipper in shock.

The skipper begrudgingly left the field in disbelief and was seen viewing his dismissal carefully in the dressing room as well.
