Following India’s win over England in the fourth ODI at Edgbaston in Birmingham, MS Dhoni became India’s most successful ODI captain after registering his 91st victory in the format. The current Indian skipper overtook Mohammed Azharuddin, who held the record previously with 90s wins.
Dhoni first captained the Indian one-day team against Australia in 2007 at Bangalore, after former captain Rahul Dravid had exited the post in a surprise move. The Ranchi-born player getting the job came as no surprise back then, as he had just led India to a historical World T20 triumph in the tournament’s first edition in South Africa.
Despite losing that series 2-4 against the Australians, Dhoni and a young Indian team came back strongly by winning the Commonwealth Bank Tri-series in Australia. From there, Dhoni’s captaincy has grown from strength to strength.
Dhoni’s greatest moment, skippering the side, came when he led the Indian team to a victory in the ODI World Cup at home in 2011. He led from the front in the final, putting on a Man of the Match performance in the final after promoting himself above an in-form Yuvraj Singh. Two years on, the 33-year-old followed the World Cup triumph by lifting the ICC Champions Trophy in England in 2013.
With 91 wins to his name, Dhoni looks set to become the first Indian captain to register 100 wins in ODIs. He is also India’s most successful skipper in Tests and T20s, with 27 wins in each format.
