“Chup kar Raja, mujhe pata hai tera zyada hai” – Wasim Akram reminisces funny memory with Sunil Gavaskar

Former Pakistan captain Wasim Akram recently reminisced about his playing days. The legendary all-rounder shared a funny story with former Indian skipper Sunil Gavaskar.

Akram revealed how Gavaskar pulls his leg since he has a higher Test score than the legendary batter. Notably, the left-hander had scored an unbeaten 257* against Zimbabwe in 1996.

Gavaskar was the first batter to reach 10,000 runs in Tests. The right-hander’s highest Test score is 236*, which came against West Indies in 1983.

Akram told Sportskeeda’s Match ki Baat:

“Sunny bhai se bhi highest hai mera score Test cricket mein score toh mein unse puchta hu, tang krte hain mujhe, meri badi bahot dosti hai- Sunny bahi apka highest Test score kya hai and wo – Chup kar Raja, mujhe pata hai tera zyada hai. 257*, that wasn’t a fluke.”

Translated version:

“My highest Test score is even better than Sunil Gavaskar. So, at times, he pulls my leg because we share a good friendship. I often ask him – 'Sunny bhai, what’s your highest Test score?” He is like – “Shut up Raja, I know your score is higher than me.'”

The interaction comes weeks ahead of the Indo-Pak clash at the 2024 T20 World Cup on June 9.

Wasim Akram and Sunil Gavaskar’s career in numbers

Wasim Akram and Sunil Gavaskar are among the greatest players to have played the game.

Akram represented Pakistan in 104 Tests and 356 ODIs, picking up 414 and 502 wickets, respectively. The left-arm pacer holds the record for the most wickets for Pakistan in both Tests and ODIs. He was equally handy with the bat, scoring 2898 and 3717 runs in red-ball and white-ball formats, respectively. The legendary all-rounder was part of the 1992 World Cup-winning team.

Meanwhile, Gavaskar has played 125 Tests and 108 ODIs for India. The right-hander scored 10,122 runs in Tests with the help of 34 centuries. He also amassed 3092 runs for the Men in Blue in ODIs. Gavaskar was part of the 1983 World Cup-winning team.
