Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) have managed to score 199/6 in the first innings of the 54th IPL 2023 match against Mumbai Indians (MI) on Tuesday, May 9, at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai.
MI captain Rohit Sharma won the toss and opted to field first on a decent batting surface. Jason Behrendorff gave them an ideal start by dismissing Virat Kohli and Anuj Rawat in successive overs. He would have also dismissed Faf du Plessis for a golden duck if Nehal Wadhera did not drop a simple catch in the first over of the match.
Du Plessis (65) made MI pay dearly and took full advantage of the reprieve by smashing a fluent half-century. He built a 120-run partnership with Glenn Maxwell (68) to set up a great platform for RCB after they were reeling under pressure at 16/2. Maxwell was in ominous form as he smashed the Mumbai bowlers all over the park en route to a blistering half-century.
Behrendorff came back in the 13th over and dismissed Maxwell to give MI a massive breakthrough. RCB's innings lost momentum from there and ended up reaching 199/6. Dinesh Karthik (30 off 18 balls) played a vital cameo in the death overs.
Reflecting on the first innings during the mid-innings break, Maxwell said:
"It was very good. Me and Faf have had some good partnerships this year. It was really enjoyable. (On the score) It is a bit strange. I think it was about a 200-sort of wicket. There were a few balls that kept low and there was a bit of inconsistent bounce. Very happy with that score."
"(On his approach) You try and play the conditions as much as possible. I tried to give myself a chance today. I tried to execute whatever came into my mind first. I was super positive today. (On the reverse lap) I just looked at the field and tried to play the field on that occasion."
