The Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) registered a narrow one-run win against the Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) in the 36th match of IPL 2024 on Sunday (April 21) at Eden Gardens. Courtesy of the win, KKR displaced SRH at the second position in the points table.

After being asked to bat first in the match, KKR managed to reach a massive total of 222/6 in 20 overs on the back of contributions from Phil Salt (48), Shreyas Iyer (50), Rinku Singh (24), Andre Russell (27*), and Ramandeep Singh (24). Yash Dayal and Cameron Green scalped two wickets each for RCB in the bowling department.

In reply, RCB lost both their openers Virat Kohli and Faf du Plessis in 3.1 overs with 35 on the board. Will Jacks (55) and Rajat Patidar (52) then hit aggressive half-centuries to put the visiting team's chase on track with their 102-run partnership. Andre Russell dismissed both the set batters in the 12th over to bring KKR back into the contest.

Regular fall of wickets after that dented RCB's chances of winning the match. When they needed 21 runs from the final over, lower-order batter Karan Sharma tried his best by smashing Mitchell Starc for three sixes but unfortunately could not finish the game in the end.

At the post-match presentation, KKR skipper Shreyas Iyer reflected on the hard-fought win and said:

"It's tough to stay calm in such close games but I am elated to get the two points. Yeah it is extremely tough and the pressure is on. Every individual needs to put their hands up. Russell did that taking those wickets which completely turned the game. See it's a funny game. At the end of the day when you need 18 runs of the last ball the bowler is under pressure."

Iyer continued:

"One six here and there changes it completely. It is important that we maintain the calmness and think what the batter would be doing. Lot of challenges will be thrown to us and we have to ensure to get the meetings right and execute. Yes it was a pivotal knock. I wanted to stay till the end and hit a few fours here and there. Some imperative boundaries we got in between. I want to continue with the same flow."
