Team India captain Rohit Sharma had a forgettable start to his 2023 ODI World Cup campaign with the bat. He was among the three batters to be dismissed for a duck against Australia at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai, trapped lbw by an incoming delivery from Josh Hazlewood.

The opener, however, demonstrated great rhythm in India’s second match of the 2023 World Cup, which was played against Afghanistan at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in Delhi.

The 36-year-old clobbered 131 off 84 balls as the Men in Blue chased down a target of 273 in just 35 overs, with eight wickets in hand. Rohit struck 16 fours and five sixes in his belligerent knock and broke numerous records along the way.

The Indian skipper has featured in two matches against Pakistan in the ODI World Cup and has scored 155 runs at an average of 77.50. Rohit was not picked for the 2011 edition in India.

As a result, his first match against Pakistan in the ODI World Cup was during the 2015 edition in Adelaide. The right-handed batter was dismissed cheaply for 15 off 20 balls, top-edging a pull off Sohail Khan.

Rohit, however, made amends for his failure in 2015 with a superlative knock in the 2019 edition. The elegant batter had scored five hundreds in the competition, one of which came against arch-rivals Pakistan in Manchester.

The opener smashed his way to 140 off 113 balls, striking 14 fours and three sixes. He was Player of the Match for his fantastic innings as India won the game by 89 runs [DLS method].

Looking at Rohit’s overall record against Pakistan in ODIs, he has notched up 787 runs in 18 matches at an average of 49.18, with two tons.

Apart from his century in Manchester during the 2019 World Cup, he scored an unbeaten 111 off 119 balls in an Asia Cup Super 4 contest in Dubai in September 2018. Rohit and Shikhar Dhawan (114 off 100) added 210 for the first wicket as India chased 238 in 39.3 overs, with nine wickets in hand.

Rohit missed out on the three-figure mark during the 2017 Champions Trophy group match in Birmingham. He was run out for 91 off 119 balls, an impressive knock featuring seven fours and two sixes.

Team India went on to post 319/3 in 48 overs and ended up hammering Pakistan by 124 runs [DLS method].
