Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) take on Chennai Super Kings (CSK) in match number 68 of IPL 2024 at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru on Saturday, May 18. The result of this mega clash will decide who becomes the fourth team to qualify for the playoffs, after Kolkata Knight Riders, Rajasthan Royals and Sunrisers Hyderabad.

The equation for CSK is simple. A win or a washout will be enough for them to clinch one of the top four slots. Even if they lose, they need to ensure that RCB stay below their net run rate. That way they can qualify on the basis of a superior run rate. Bengaluru, though, not only need to beat Chennai but also go past their net run rate to confirm their place in the IPL 2024 playoffs.

In case, Royal Challengers Bengaluru bat first in the game and score 200, they need to win by at least 18 runs. If they are chasing, they need to get home with 11 or more balls to spare. The weather could, however, hamper proceedings at the Chinnaswamy on Saturday, and there could be a possibility of a shortened game as well.

In case of a truncated match, the equation for RCB will get trickier. If they are chasing a target of 75 in a five-over game, they need to get home in 3.1 overs to go past CSK's net run rate. If they bat first and score 75, Bengaluru will need to restrict Chennai to 57 or fewer.

In a 15-over match, if CSK post 190, RCB must get home in 13.1 overs. If they bat first, they need to restrict Chennai to 172.

Looking at a 10-over scenario, if Bengaluru are chasing a target of 141, they need to win in 8.1 overs. If they bat first and score 140, Faf du Plessis and Co. must restrict the opposition to 122.

What will happen if the RCB vs CSK match is washed out?

In case no result is possible in the Royal Challengers Bengaluru vs Chennai Super Kings match on Saturday at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium, Bengaluru will be knocked out of the playoffs race and Chennai will seal their top-four spot.

In the event of a washout, both teams will get one point each. Royal Challengers Bengaluru will finish the league stage on 13 points, while Chennai Super Kings will end on 15 points.
