Stats: India break their personal record for the most number of Test wins in a calendar year

With a win in the fifth and final Test against England in Chennai, India have now gone past their personal record for the most number of Test wins in a calendar year, The triumph on Tuesday was the team’s 9th win of 2016, going past their previous best of 8.

India has had a great year in the longest format of the game, having won a series in the West Indies, a home series against New Zealand and are now confirmed to lift the crown in the series against England, which ends next Tuesday.

The hosts not only have the chance to end the series with a 4-0 scoreline but can also go past their personal record for the most number of Test wins in a calendar year.

The win in the Mumbai Test was India's 8th win of 2016, which put them on par with the most number of wins in 2010, under the leadership of MS Dhoni.

A win also puts Virat Kohli equal with Sunil Gavaskar for an Indian captain remaining unbeaten in the most number of consecutive Test matches.

In the all-time list for a team, it is the West Indies who lead the pack with 11 wins in the year 1984, England equalled them in 2004 as did South Africa in 2008. If India do win the Chennai Test, then they will be joint fourth with Australia(1999 and 2005 ) and England(2010) with 9 Test wins in a Single year.
