South African cricketers celebrate
South Africa took a 1-0 lead thanks to David Miller and Imran Tahir

David Miller’s unbeaten fifty helped South Africa take a 1-0 lead in their three-match T20I series against Australia. After winning the toss, Australia elected to bat and got off to a flying start courtesy of Aaron Finch and David Warner.

But they failed to capitalise on that start as they lost eight wickets in the 14 overs following the powerplay and finished with just 157/9. That was thanks largely to a mature innings from Mitchell Marsh and a blitzkrieg by Finch.

In response, the Proteas lost both their openers early and had to rely to their captain, Faf du Plessis to steady the ship. He was doing just that before he went for a suicidal run and was found well short of his crease by Peter Nevill.

At 95/6, the match looked in the balance but David Miller’s composed knock ensured that it was the Proteas who took a lead in the three-match T20I series.

Here are some interesting numbers from the match:

0 – This was the first time David Warner has played a T20I and not opened the innings. He had played 54 innings before this match, where he batted at No.3.

2 – This was the second Golden Duck of AB de Villiers’ international career. His only other such score was in a Test against New Zealand at Dunedin in March 2012.

4 – AB de Villiers has now been dismissed for 0, four times in 2016, which is the most for any international batsman.

5 – This loss was Australia’s fifth consecutive in T20Is, their joint-most in the format. On three previous occasions, in 2009, 2010-11 and 2012-13, they had a similar run of defeats.

6 – JP Duminy became the sixth South African bowler to be hit for three sixes in an over. Morne Morkel (twice), Roelof van der Merwe, Wayne Parnell, Aaron Phangiso and Imran Tahir were the others to have achieved this mark.

15 – This was the 15th T20I between South Africa and Australia, which is the joint-most number of matches between two teams. Sri Lanka have been involved in the other two as they have faced New Zealand and Pakistan 15 times.

24 – The 24 runs conceded by JP Duminy is the joint-third most expensive by a South African bowler along with Morne Morkel. The record for the most expensive over is held by Rory Kleinveldt who conceded 25 against India.

47 – That was David Miller’s previous highest T20I score. His unbeaten 53 was also his maiden fifty in T20Is.

69 – Australia scored 69 runs in the Powerplay, losing just a single wicket but failed to kick on in the remainings overs, where they went at just 6.28 runs per over.

158 – This was the highest successful run-chase in a T20I at Kingsmead, Durban. No team had ever chased a total greater than 151 at this ground.

2010 – Before today, the last time AB de Villiers was out for a duck in T20Is was in 2010.
