Reports: Stuart Broad to take hiatus from cricket after England-India Test series, plans knee surgery

England fast bowler Stuart Broad, who has had issues with his right knee of late as a result of patella tendonitis, is expected to have a surgery after the end of the ongoing 5-match Test series against India, which will rule him out of cricketing action for 3-4 months, according to reports from The Daily Mail.

The 28-year-old first encountered the problem during the Ashes series last year but has managed to carry on, courtesy of a specially designed supportive brace to reduce the pain. While that is relatively long period for an international player to be out, it is understood that the Nottinghamshire quick has arrived at this decision with the World Cup 2015, to be held in Oceania, in mind.

Sources close to him confirmed the news: “It makes logical sense to have the surgery at the end of this Test series as the focus is then very much on the World Cup.”

Speaking to Mail Sport on Sunday, Broad had said: “At Lord’s I was having hot baths in the middle of the night just to get some warmth through it but I can honestly say that I’m more confident about getting through all five Tests than I have been at any point this summer.”

The surgery means Broad, who has 488 international wickets, will miss out on the 5-match One Day International series against India that follows immediately and then the tour of Sri Lanka later this year.

With the series level on 1-1, the fourth Test is underway at Old Trafford, while the fifth begins on August 15 at The Oval.
