Twitch star Zack "Asmongold," who is known for playing Blizzard's World of Warcraft, recently reacted to the cancellation of BlizzCon 2024. The content creator was pretty let down by the announcement and noted that people did not seem excited enough for the developer's games to generate interest in the convention.

The annual event is known to attract fans from all over the country and beyond. It was not held for two years during and after the COVID-19 pandemic. However, 2024 marks the first time that it has been canceled since it started in 2005.

Asmongold seemed quite pessimistic when he heard the news, even casting doubt on Blizzard's ability to host another convention like this one ever again:

"People's excitement for the game(s) has just gone down so much that I don't know if we will ever have another BlizzCon. I really don't. When you think about it, I really don't know if we will have another BlizzCon."

Asmongold is known for being vocal about video game culture, having criticized Blizzard in the past. After reading the official BlizzCon 2024 cancelation announcement on the developer's website, the Twitch star started theorizing about the reasons behind the decision.

Asmongold noted that recent games and updates from the company did not seem to excite fans as much as they did before. The MMO streamer claimed that the World of Warcraft expansion, The War Within, had also failed to generate hype:

"Why is BlizzCon canceled? How are the games doing? WoW new expansion, very low excite(ment). I would say very few people are actually excited about The War Within. I don't see any viral videos for World of Warcraft trending either. The only videos that are really popular for WoW are meta-level videos about nostalgia or videos that are negative in one way or another."

Asmongold then criticized Blizzard's other big IP, Overwatch 2, and claimed that canceled features and controversial updates were to blame for its loss of popularity:

"So you look at Overwatch. There is like literally nothing good about it. People don't like some of the new characters it seems. There is always drama about the new characters. Overwatch 2, the entire reason it existed (referring to removal of PvE elements), was removed. No one gives a sh*t about Overwatch 2, right? Overwatch effectively killed the hype for its gone."

He also attacked Blizzard's handling of games like Starcraft 2 and Heroes of the Storm:

"Starcraft is a dead game, even Blizzard says it's a dead game. Heroes of the Storm, Blizzard already buried it, so it's been a dead game. Hearthstone, I don't even know anything about that game, no idea never played it. So where is the intrinsic excitement that people have for BlizzCon?"

The Twitch streamer then brought up last year's convention and how, for the first time in history, BlizzCon tickets were not immediately selling out, which was the norm in the good old days:

"Here is an even better way that you can tell that it's the case. It's the fact that last year they didn't immediately sell out for tickets for BlizzCon. That is the first time that has ever happened. Because a lot of people bought five or ten tickets to scalp and resell them, and they couldn't resell them because guess what? People could buy from the official site."

Readers should note that Blizzard has confirmed the convention will be back next year.
