Spanish Formula 1 driver Fernando Alonso was involved in a serious crash during the last day of pre-season testing at the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya on Sunday. The McLaren Honda driver hit a wall at around 150 miles per hour as he came out of the third corner of the circuit when his car ran out of control, exiting the curve shortly before the lunch break, reports Xinhua.

He was taken from the crash scene in an ambulance and then air-lifted to hospital for tests. McLaren said that Alonso was "conscious" while his advisor Luis Garcia tweeted saying the driver was "okay".

Alonso rejoined McLaren, whom he had left in 2007, after ending his contract with Ferrari at the end of last season. He hopes that the return to one of his former teams will help him in his aim to lift a third world title.

The 2015 season starts with the Australian Grand Prix March 15.
