Fernando Alonso's worrying indictment of Max Verstappen's pace: "It was a little bit too easy for him"

F1 Grand Prix of Miami
Alonso now has 4 podiums in 5 races

Fernando Alonso shared what was a somewhat worrying indictment of Max Verstappen's pace in Miami where he felt it was all too easy for the Dutchman in the race.

The Red Bull driver started the race in P9 but it didn't take him long to make his way through the field and overtake Alonso 15 laps into the race. After that point, it was all about hunting down Sergio Perez on an alternative strategy and securing the win.

Fernando Alonso did, however, admit after the race that it felt that everything was just far too easy for Verstappen in the race. The Spaniard felt that Verstappen could get stuck in the DRS train which could hamper his progress. Unfortunately, that didn't happen.

Talking about the progress made by the Red Bull driver, Alonso told Sky Sports F1:

“At the moment, it is hard to keep them behind. And I was hoping that he had like a DRS train of cars in front of him but he was just making moves, one after the other and the guys in front, they were not in the DRS either. So it was a little bit too easy for him. Hopefully, next time we try between all of us to make things more difficult.”

Alonso also admitted that it was a bit of a lonely race for him as he didn't have much challenge once he passed Carlos Sainz. He said:

“I had a bit of a lonely race, nothing to do in front of us with the Red Bulls but also quite a big margin behind. It depends on the circuit but here out of Turn 11 there is a big TV screen there. So I was watching the race a little bit, I saw some movements from Lance into Turn 1, so I did enjoy that but I didn’t know which position he was fighting for.”

Fernando Alonso explains the 'Plan A minus 12' team radio

Fernando Alonso did have a hilarious team radio early in the race where he suggested pitting 'Plan A minus 12 laps'. Talking about it after the race, Alonso laughed it off and said:

“We had Plan A and Plan B, and I mixed the Plan A and Plan B I think, and then minus 12 was not what I meant. So I said sorry, a few seconds later, they [Aston Martin] understood because they were laughing, it was not possible really to go minus 12 because we passed already that lap.”

Fernando Alonso has now managed four podiums in five races this season as he continues to make giant strides this season.
