10 contenders for Premier League's top goalscorer

Sergio Aguero is one of the most dangerous strikers in the world right now

The English Premier League is off to a fascinating start, not because any club in particular looks spectacular, but because we have more parity than we're used to. Manchester City have a slim lead in the table, but the EPL remains fairly wide open about a quarter of the way through the season. But even tighter than the overall league race is that for top scorer, as it's a little too early for any one player to have separated himself significantly. We do, however, have an idea of which strikers and attacking midfielders are in good form this season. That means it's an appropriate time for a look ahead at possible winners of top scorer honours. As part of some of the betting insights Betfair provides, the site has taken a look ahead at this very race, with odds for the players likeliest to score the most. These are the 10 men leading the race.1. Sergio AgueroAguero won the honour last season and has picked up right where he left off. He has six goals from nine matches for Manchester City and will continue to benefit from the advantage of playing at the head of an extremely high-powered offence.2. Alexis SanchezAlexis Sanchez showed his talent early in his Arsenal tenure a season ago, but he hasn't appeared to truly find a rhythm until this season. Also with six goals through nine matches, he's going at a very steady pace and has taken control of the Gunners' attack, though Olivier Giroud and Mesut Ozil have been factors lately, too.3. Jamie VardyJamie Vardy is leading the way thus far with an incredible nine goals in nine matches, prompting The Guardian to inquire about his lack of recognition. Indeed, the Leicester City star seems to have barely cracked a headline despite his blistering start. He's certainly earned consideration, though at this stage the expectation for many remains that he'll eventually fall off to a degree as a goal per match is not really sustainable.4. Diego CostaDiego Costa hasn't quite gotten going yet, but with Chelsea already playing from behind in the tables, he has his work cut out for him. That could mean increasingly aggressive play moving forward, and we all know from autumn of last year how quickly he can pile up goals. The Brazil-born Spaniard has shown that he is the guy for Chelsea and has shown signs of getting back his scoring touch with his goals in the last match.5. Romelu LukakuWith five goals to date, Romelu Lukaku figures to once again factor into this race. He's a supremely confident striker, and while his Everton squad isn't playing up to its capability of late, he represents the heart and soul of its attack. He should keep up a pretty solid goal scoring pace.6. Anthony MartialJust 19 years old, Anthony Martial has three goals for Manchester United, despite having to deal with competition for his own role. Express ran comments from Louis van Gaal about the decision to play Martial over the popular but struggling youngster Memphis Depay in a recent match, and the way Martial is delivering, he looks like a key player in Man Utd.'s attack moving forward.7. Daniel SturridgeSturridge is once again dealing with injury concerns, but if he can stay on the field consistently he'll be leading the way for a Liverpool club that hopes to be reinvigorated under new manager Jurgen Klopp.8. Graziano PelleSouthampton have had a pretty decent run of it so far in EPL play and sit in eighth place, largely thanks to being able to score 15 goals in the first nine match weeks. Striker Graziano Pelle has been responsible for five of them and could be as competitive as any of these bigger names in the race for the scoring title.9. Wayne RooneyAn article at ESPN FC recently discussed the fact that Wayne Rooney still won't contemplate retiring at age 30, and it's a tribute to that dedication and persistence that he remains on the goal scoring watch. He's struggled a little bit with finishing chances thus far in 2015-16, however, and will need to catch up.10. Theo WalcottArsenal's young forward has a pair of goals to date, though his placement on this list of favourites is somewhat puzzling. Alexis Sanchez will almost certainly lead the Gunners' scoring efforts, and behind him Olivier Giroud still figures to do the bulk of the finishing. As mentioned, this race remains very tight, and it's early enough that some other surprising names could still emerge: Georginio Wijnaldum of Newcastle United, for example, already has six goals, and Watford's Odion Ighalo has five. But going by a combination of general quality, opportunity, and performance thus far this season, the 10 names above are the ones to watch for the EPL's top scorer race.
