5 transfer targets to save Manchester United's season

In less than one month, the January transfer window will open. And it is no secret that to save United’s season, David Moyes must be involved deeply in this transfer window. It is rare for United to make any marquee signings in January, but here are 5 transfer targets United should look into.

Leighton Baines

Leighton Baines has had an impressive season last year, and had an impressive season this year too until injury cut it short. Baines has been on United’s radar for a long time and was bid upon this summer, along with Maraoune Fellaini for a total sum of 28 million euros, which Everton described as “insulting and derisory.”

United are in a desperate need of a left-back, with Evra reaching the twilight of his career and Alexander Buttner being unimpressive so far. Evra is not the same defender he was some years back. He has lost his awareness (although his attacking ability is a bonus point). Often United have been exposed on the right flank, due to Evra’s slow reactions and unawareness.

Baines, on the other hand, is arguably the best left-back in the league. Also, he created 97 chances in the league last season, more than any other player. But considering his age(29), he might not be a great buy. But his addition to the squad will definitely increase the strength of the squad.

Ander Herrera

The Atletico Bilbao midfielder. He’s just 24 and is the driving force in the Bilbao side’s midfield. United bid for him last summer, but his release clause of 35 million euros was, according to United, too much and eventually the deal collapsed. Herrera will add the much needed creativity to United’s midfield.

Last season, he was the 2nd highest dribbler in La Liga with 1.7 dribbles every play. Only Ronaldo (1.9) bettered him. He’s young, dynamic, quick with the ball, good passer. Everything United currently needs.

Would he be a good buy? Definitely. But his release clause of 35 million may force United too look elsewhere.

Kevin Strootman

This is one transfer I wouldn’t count on. Strootman was on United’s radar for a long time at his time at PSV Eindhoven. He joined the Italian outfit, AS Roma this season and him leaving the club this early is next to inmpossible. But Strootman has been impressive for Roma in their midfield, helping them to hold on to the 2nd spot.

Strootman is a box-to-box midfielder. Not since the time of Roy Keane has that position been aptly filled at United. United needs someone to dictate the play in midfield, to track back to defend, the hold the ball in possession, and too pass out in the front. And Strootman is perfect for it. Also his heavy build helps him to win challenges.

Would he make United better? Definitely!

Julian Draxler

Schalke’s product. Draxler is considered one of the hottest prospects in Europe. Capable of playing either left or right wing, he is a talent. He controls the ball well, creates goals, scores goals, delivers excellent crosses. Everything United needs on the flanks.

And he’s publicly admitted that he wants to join the top teams in Europe (Manchester United included). This one may be possible.

Marco Reus

This is one player I would for whom I would personally say “SIGN HIM UP, MOYES!”

The Borussia Dortmund creative midfielder is (along with Draxler) the hottest prospect in Europe. He’s capable of playing on either flank, left or right, or in the center midfield. Creator of goals, scorer of goals, hands down, he’s what United needs. He’s fast, with or without the ball, has an eye for the goal, is selfless, an amazing playmaker. And he’s just 24! His best years are still to come, and he joins United, he’ll definitely add the creativity in midfield United desperately needs and miserably lacks.

He can play in front of Carrick, behind the main man, or on the flank (since the current wingers are dismal).

He’s definitely the one United should bid for.
