Mesut Ozil has revealed that Arsenal have always been his first choice over any other club. The ex-Real Madrid player who has been in high demand is set to sign a new contract with Arsenal.

“I spoke with Wenger and he wanted me at Arsenal,” Ozil said. "If I get the opportunity to change clubs, you'll be the first choice," was his reply to Wenger. He also went on to share how unusual it is to be a part of an outstanding team like Arsenal and to seal his stay with the Gunners once he was finished with Madrid.

"After we spoke, I decided to come to Arsenal because I remember Dennis Bergkamp, Robert Pires, such great footballers," said the player.

The German went on to state that he wanted to move to the Gunners in order to match the fidelity of such great players. Ozil said, “I wanted to be a part of that too. So to come to Arsenal and be successful with this team was good. My first two seasons we won the FA Cup so I really enjoy playing for such a big club like Arsenal.”

This season, Ozil has 4 appearances in the Champions League with 4 goals and 2 assists. In the Premier League, meanwhile, he has made 10 appearances with 3 goals and 1 assist.

Ozil has gradually developed from being a playmaker to a versatile attacker and is now consistently getting himself into the best scoring positions. According to Arsene Wenger, Ozil’s impeccable goalscoring potential has finally been unlocked and his shooting has become ‘killer’.

The German midfielder has been at his best recently with his best goal of the campaign coming in the 3-2 victory over Ludogorets in the Champions League. However, he went missing in the North London derby although it was the German’s free-kick that eventually produced the goal for Arsenal.

”Mesut Ozil can only become a legend if he commits his long-term future to the club in the same way Denis Bergkamp did," stated Arsene Wenger recently. Dennis Bergkamp, who committed to Arsenal for the long term had emerged as a legend after playing for the club until the age of 38.

Reports suggest that Ozil is set to sign a new six-year deal with Arsenal. The new contract is reportedly set to earn him a massive £220,000 per week.
