20-year-old Indian goalkeeper Gurpreet Singh Sandhu has earned a trial at Wigan Athletic Football Club, a team that plays in the Barclays Premier League in England. He is due to arrive in the North-Western English city on Wednesday.

This news comes after Gurpreet’s impressive performances in the 2013 AFC U22 Asian Cup Qualifiers in Qatar at the end of June this year, where he captained the Indian contingent. The Punjabi lad was initially spotted by Goalkeeping Guru and Former-Newcastle United goalkeeper John Burridge. Burridge has been been a mentor to Ali-Al Habsi, and is a good friend of Singh Sandhu’s current coach at East Bengal FC Trevor Morgan.

At 6 feet 5 inches, Gurpreet has the ideal physique to be a success on the international stage. He comes from a long line of good goalkeepers in India like Subrata Paul who was linked to Arsenal in 2010.

Earlier this month, Indian captain Sunil Chhetri completed his move to Sporting Clube de Portugal’s B team. If the Chandigarh boy’s trial is successful, Indian football fans would have not one but two reasons to celebrate as more and more players gain crucial international exposure.
