"Bring back the Heroes"- 5 possible returns to EPL

The current transfer window is progressing at a dull pace and as of now, there has not been any surprise moves to the English Premier League. The top flight of English football is considered to be the most entertaining league in the world and is an ensemble of finest players from all over the place. For years, it has trained and developed talented players who have moved on in search of greener pastures. The grass, as green as it seems, is not what it actually is!!

The fans have seen them leave their clubs but never did they leave their hearts for any moment. They have been adored in their respective clubs and who wouldn’t want them back again in the same streets? The league has it all – the pace, the thrill, the money and the fans. What else would a player ask for when he pulls off his shirt and comes out of the tunnel every time?

I have compiled a list of top 5 players who will be welcomed whenever they want to make a move to back to where they belonged.

Didier Drogba to Chelsea

What Chelsea have achieved today can be credited to the pockets of the Russian billionaire Roman, but all that would not have been possible without this one player, Didier Drogba. His last kick in a blue shirt brought the most coveted European Trophy to Stamford Bridge and gave him a legendary status, that’s how important he was. Drogba can be regarded as one of the best players of Chelsea in the Roman era and also the most inspirational one. He led the scoring charts for Chelsea in almost every season he was here and gathered 3 league titles and 4 FA cups. His departure at the end of last season was emotional and he left a void in the team which could not be filled by mega money signings.

Unsettled in Shanghai, a move back to EPL to save his team’s fortunes this season can be lucrative for Chelsea. One thing that they need this year is someone to take responsibility; Drogba always took responsibility! His authority on the field was visible in his eyes when he orchestrated the game around him. He has made several trips back to Stamford Bridge for holidays and would reconsider coming back here for actual business. Fans would be delighted with this and will be a good PR strategy to win them back after the Benitez saga.

Roman is known for surprising his fans, this one might be the biggest of all !

Cesc Fabregas to Arsenal

Arsenal fans still adore him and he was the central figure of their team in his hey days. The captain of the young gunner’s team and was expected to deliver more for the club and the manager. His reasons to leave were understandable and fans obliged to his desire. At present, he seems to be settling down at the Nou Camp but he still has not achieved the peak. His position on the field is not his favorite one and was asked to adapt to wherever he was played.

Arsene Wenger recently stated that there is a possibility that he can persuade Cesc Fabregas to come back from Barcelona and rejoin Arsenal, because his former star midfielder “really loves this club”. Not in this window surely, but who wouldn’t want him to join Arsenal again! He proved his mettle here in the English league before and at present has developed into one of the best attack minded midfielders of the world. His signing would lift the fans again and vindicate their belief that Arsene is the right man for the chair.

Captain Fantastic is welcome back anytime he wishes to come home !

Chances: 20 %

Xabi Alonso to Liverpool

Alonso was an integral part of the Liverpool team that won the Champions League in 2004-05. Benitez brought him from Real Sociedad when he attempted to revolutionize the Liverpool team. He, along with Gerrard, formed a midfield partnership which carried the team to European glory. Differences with Benitez led to his departure from Liverpool in the summer of 2009, something he didn’t wish for. Fans always had his back and would accept him with open arms if he wishes to come back to Liverpool.

He reinstated his desire to make a return to Premier League when asked about his future at Real. “There is always a chance I could go back to the Premier League as I always enjoyed good times there.”, a clear indication of his love for the English league. Liverpool couldn’t replace his composed presence in the midfield and they would love to have him back. The Spaniard is the first name on the sheet when he plays for his national team but seems to be unsettled in the Madrid setup. A good possibility for a move in the summer transfer window as he will have a year left on his current contract.

He and Gerrard can recreate the magic and bring back the glory days for Liverpool.

Chances: 50%

Luka Modric to Tottenham Hostpur

We understand when players want to play for the bigger clubs abroad, but on what expense? One such player is Luka Modric, who was the star of the English league but has found it difficult to replicate the same form in Spain. He has hardly played in the Spanish capital since his £33 million move in the summer. A few substitute performances in the La Liga have left the Croatian frustrated for first team opportunities. He was the most creative midfielder in the Premier League and was considered a pivot for the Spurs team. His hype was vindicated when he was followed by Chelsea and Manchester United for two years, but he decided to opt for a move abroad, something that did not turn out to be as good as it seemed.

Spurs fan would have moved on by now but he can still come back to England and be with other clubs. Reports in the media suggest that Chelsea are planning to make a move in the summer, along with ignited interest from the Manchester clubs. The only supporting factor for his move to Spurs will be the manager AVB, who followed Modric in his Chelsea days.

We would love him to be back in England as such a talent shouldn’t be wasted on a bench !

Chances: 10% (to Spurs), 60% (to any English Club)

Cristiano Ronaldo to Manchester United

Not happy at €1 million a month? Ask Cristiano Ronaldo the reasons for it! The poster boy of world football is not ready to sign a new contract at Madrid as he feels he needs more out of life than just money. If reports are to be believed, he wants to see out his contract and come back to United at the end of his current term. As a player, Ronaldo was worshipped at Manchester and the fans adore him till date. His pace and physique are made for the Premier League and he would again use it to torment the defenders. 174 goals in 174 caps for Madrid is an epitome of his quality. He is a goal scoring machine even though he doesn’t play as a striker at Real. Its hard to understand his recent attitude towards the club but it seems that he needs to move on.

His heart lies at Old Trafford and he only wishes to come here. Madrid won’t let their world record signing go for free and would be ready to sell him for a cut price if he doesn’t change his mind. Still 27, he has plenty of football left in him for it to be utilized by Sir Alex again. If he comes, he will be a valuable addition to the Red Devil’s star studded attacking lineup, which might be the most lethal one. The Premier league has already witnessed what he has to offer and wouldn’t mind having him back again as a nightmare for defenders. A move next summer may be possible for him but will United by ready to pay such a hefty sum of money?

A long shot may be, but worth it!

Chances: 60-70 %
