Sean Dyche’s Burnley have been promoted to the English Premier League for the 2014-15 season with a 2-0 victory over Wigan at Turf Moor and join Leicester City who have already secured their promotion to the top flight English football.
It was Ashley Barnes who gave Burnley the lead against Wigan with his strike from a Dean Marney cross followed by another goal from Michael Kightly who put the ball at the back if the net from a free kick.
With the promotion, they have now ended their four-year wait to the first division, although the last time they had earned promotion without going to the playoffs was back in 1973.
“We were intent on getting promoted ourselves, not having to rely on anyone else for help,” manager Sean Dyche was delighted post their victory.
“It’s getting harder to win automatic promotion to the Premier League because of all the constraints on teams like ourselves. I’m extremely proud.”
“It’s a great feeling. It’s been a long season but we thoroughly deserve it. We’ll enjoy today, then crack on next year,” Burnley goalscorer Michael Kightly told reporters. “We never got complacent, we always stuck to the job. The boys have been different class and the fans have been magnificent.”
Burnley are now just four points behind league leaders Leicester who are playing Bolton on Tuesday.
