Can Chelsea become the new Invincibles?

Everyone is talking about Chelsea going the whole season undefeated and replacing Arsenal’s “Invincibles” of the 2003-04 campaign. But, the big question remains. After playing 14 games in the league, Chelsea have a six point lead over arch rivals Manchester City and have dropped points only to City, United and Sunderland and remain undefeated in all competitions, with top spot already secure in the Champions League group stage having a game in hand.

In fact, Jose Mourinho’s men have been so dominant that people are no longer talking about Chelsea winning the league, but instead, about Chelsea going the whole season undefeated. Considering how modern the Premier League has become, and how every game- whether it is the big guns or the lower ranked teams - is a difficult game, going the whole season without defeat is definitely a long shot.

But Chelsea have already proved that they have the manpower, the winning mentality and the confidence to achieve that feat. One can also argue that they have already faced their toughest tests at The Etihad, Anfield, Goodison Park and Old Trafford.

Chelsea have been impeccable this season. They have set a fearful pace in the League that many teams are finding difficult to catch up with.

City is the in-form team, but they are still six points behind with an inferior goal difference. With Aguero firing in all directions, Pundits are talking about how Chelsea should be feeling the heat. But right now, they are showing no signs of fear whatsoever! City can keep winning, but that won’t change anything.

Chelsea don’t look like they are going to lose anytime soon. In every game that they have conceded first, there is no panic created. They just keep doing what they are supposed to do, and the goal comes eventually. This can be seen in games against Liverpool, Palace and Burnley. Such is the confidence oozing out of every player in this Chelsea squad.

In the game against Tottenham, Spurs enjoyed a lot of possession and played very good football in the first 20 minutes, Chelsea remained calm and well-structured. Then suddenly, two chances and two goals! Game over.

After that, it was all, ‘Show us what you got!’ playing from Chelsea and eventually the third goal came as well.

It has come to a point where a draw is considered as bad as a defeat. After dropping points against Sunderland, Mourinho was asked if his players were disappointed on letting City close the gap between them. His reaction was this :

"We're top of the Premier League, top of the group in the Champions League, quarter-finals of the Capital One Cup; not losing one match for four months.," he continued.

"The team has to feel very, very well. And, when the defeat arrives, I think we have to feel exactly in the same way. We are doing things very, very well and it's not a bad result when the bad result arrives.”

"That's not going to change our self-belief, our self-esteem."

This clearly shows how focussed and determined Mourinho and his men are. They have set their goal on winning the league and nothing will stop them. From the giant figure of Courtois at the back, to the beast of Costa up front, Chelsea look solid, and with their calmness, they will march on to win the league. There is nothing else in the minds of these boys in Blue.

Last season, we were an incomplete puzzle. This season, we are more than complete. We have set the bar really high and it is a tough call to predict how this "perfect" season is going to be anything but. After all, it is Mourinho’s second season in charge. We all know what that means!
