Cavani on Chelsea’s radar: Napoli President

Napoli striker Edinson Cavani is one of the most sought after strikers in the world. At 26 years of age, he is at the peak of his powers. It is no wonder that he is credited with interest from some of the biggest clubs in the world. There have been long standing Chelsea transfer rumors that he would be coming to Stamford Bridge, but a serious interest is yet to materialize.

According to reports, he could be one of Jose Mourinho’s first signings in his second spell as the Chelsea manager. According to Sky Sports, the Napoli president has claimed that Chelsea have made an informal contact with them over the potential transfer of the Uruguayan.

“The budget for the transfer market will be based in relation to the Financial Fair Play rules.

“If Cavani is sold then I’ll reinvest all of the €63million (£53.5m) of his release clause. There is interest from Chelsea in Cavani, they’ll call me in the next few hours.

“I’ll be delighted if he stays, but if he leaves then he will be adequately replaced,” said Napoli president, Aurelio De Laurentiis.

Cavani has indeed been one of the great strikers in Europe over the last few seasons, but do we really need him at this moment? Romelu Lukaku looks to be on the cusp of greatness, while Fernando Torres has also been showing signs of returning to form. Mourinho will be favouring the lone striker formation and it does not make sense to have four quality strikers in the team fighting for one position.

“I don’t know if they made an offer for me, I just know that to be coached by someone like Manuel Pellegrini or Jose Mourinho would always be a pleasure,” said Cavani to Sky Sports.

If Cavani was available at a much cheaper price, then he would be a great option.
