Thibaut Courtois has stated that he will decide on his future after the World Cup and admits that wherever he ends up next season, the Belgian wishes to be the number one goalkeeper rather than back-up.

The Belgian number one shot-stopper has spent the last three seasons at the Atletico Madrid and he helped his side to the La Liga title recently, ending a highly successful three seasons.

However, Atletico signed a new goalkeeper in Moya recently and that has spelt the end of the road for Courtois at the Vicente Calderon.

Courtois, on-loan from Chelsea, also helped Atletico beat the Blues in the Champions League semi-final recently, with Atletico set to play rivals Real Madrid this coming Saturday in the final.

With the Belgian set to return to Chelsea this summer, he admits he wants to be number one and not back-up to any goalkeeper, with Petr Cech the current shot-stopper at Stamford Bridge.

Courtois told reporters: “I think with my age and the performances I have had, I want to play. To be on the bench is not the nicest thing.

“But I will decide after the World Cup, I think. Everything will then be clear.”

Courtois also revealed he has not spoken to Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho since winning La Liga.

Courtois said: “I spoke to him in May, before the game against Barcelona. That week, he discussed with me what he thinks about me and about everything. That is it.”

The title win in Spain and the World Cup mean these are exciting times for the Genk youth product, and he admitted that he has never experienced such highs.

“Yes, [these are the best days of my career]. In this moment, I am still young. I have had four incredible seasons already, one with my team in Belgium and three with Atletico, so I can be very happy.

“Last season, to be a champion in Spain and play in the final of the Champions League was great. To be here now for a World Cup is amazing. Hopefully we can achieve some nice things here.”
