Hernandez, the Mexican striker, has set his sights on his team’s success rather than creating own milestones. He has scored 32 goals in all competitions so far for the club in the first two seasons of his stay at Old Trafford. The Mexican, popularly known as Chicharito, has been a perfect partner for Rooney on the field and proved to be a lethal weapon for Sir Alex Ferguson. After joining the Red Devils soon after the 2010 FIFA World Cup, he has won the hearts of millions of fans all over the world.
Hernandez claims that he does not set personal targets and only focuses on helping the team win matches in whatever way he can. Having said so, it is expected that the pairing of Rooney and Chicharito will devastate opponents this season. After Hernandez joined Manchester United, Fergie preferred pairing him with Rooney in most of the matches. This affected the Bulgarian Berbatov, as he stopped featuring in most of the matches. The Mexico international has also stated that he does not want to be seen as a player who plays selfishly just for achieving personal milestones and not help his team to score and win matches. He wants to be a complete player and is determined to have more number of assists rather than try scoring only to increase his goals tally. He wants to be known to the world for his all-round contribution.
Talking more about what he has in sight for the 2012-13 season, Hernandez also stated :
“I’ve never had a goal target,” Hernandez told Inside United magazine. “I don’t want to be obsessed with scoring goals, I don’t want to be only that player who only scores goals, and if I score goals I’ve played well and if I didn’t score goals I played badly.
Hernandez played a crucial role in 2010-11 season in the Red Devils’s Premier League triumph. United were pipped to the top spot last season by their arch rivals Manchester City, who scored twice in the dying minutes to clinch the title. Chicharito, like all other team members, had a major setback. He further stated that the league table turned in just a minute and as the title moved from United to City in the wink of an eye, that moment was a heart-breaking one for them.
On stating football is a team game, Hernandez also stated that nobody should blame any individual or three or four players for any loss. Playing as a team can only win you matches and more titles for your country and club, and this is the most important reason he is working very hard. He has also promised to play a very important role and help others score, besides scoring himself for his club.
He further stated: “It’s more about doing my best for the team – if the goals come then great, but if someone else scores instead of me then it’s still great for the United fans and for the club.
The league title getting snatched away in the last minute of the season has made Chicharito a much more determined player. The United fans would be waiting eagerly to see a more determined Chicharito playing with Wellbeck, Rooney or any other new signings, if any, and make them score more goals than scoring by his own only.
“You can never play one man against 11, and one player can never score all the goals by himself. If the goals are coming then good, but as I’ve always said, I would swap every one of my goals for a title with Manchester United.”
“When you win you learn to keep working hard in order to keep doing the things you did to win the title. And when you lose, you need to learn from the mistakes you made.
Seeing a goal-scoring forward help others score goals for the club will be a pleasure to the eyes. It’s not always the scorer who is remembered, the person who does all the hard work in setting up the goals for the forwards are the main players of the team. People know them for their hardwork and play-making abilities. So we are really hopeful of seeing a much determined and rejuvenated jersey number 14 at Old Trafford next season.
