After a harrowing defeat at the hands of Swansea in the third round of the FA Cup, Moyes is keen to address the concerns of this ailing United squad. After insisting for much of the previous month that there is no urgency to find players in January, Moyes has changed his stance after United’s fourth home defeat in their last six games in all competitions.

After the game, Moyes accepted that “there is an urgency that we want to sign players” and although he went onto say that it is unlikely the top targets will be available this month, the truth is that the squad is in dire need of some rejuvenation. United have stepped up their pursuit of players as United’s chief scout Robbie Cooke was seen watching Diego Costa play in the Spanish international’s role in the 1-0 win over Malaga on Saturday.

With Moyes reportedly keen on a new left back, midfielder and a striker, the Spanish international perfectly fits the bill as the latter and with 23 goals in 21 games, the striker has been in sublime form this season. The 25-year-old who was on the radar of Liverpool last summer, has a £31.5million release clause in his contract and such is the need at Old Trafford at the moment that Moyes might well be forced to activate it.

With Evra not the player he once was, Moyes is keen on bringing another left back to the fold, and his pursuit of Baines in the summer was a testament to that. If reports from the Mirror are to be believed, Moyes might well rekindle his interest in Fabio Coentrao after his failed move in the summer.

With the Portuguese player keen to make it into the World Cup squad and not getting regular playing time at Real Madrid, he might well be tempted to move to Manchester, even if Ancelotti isn’t very keen on letting him go.

Another player, who has been extensively linked with United was the one who scored the game’s only goal, Koke. But, given Atletico Madrid’s current situation, he might not make the move in January, which might well force Moyes to go back in for Ander Herrera, a player whom he tried to sign from Athletic Bilbao last summer.

Cooke was also at San Sebastian to watch Herrera play in his side’s loss against Real Sociedad and it looks as if United are serious about their bid this time around. With United’s chief scout scouring Spain for talent, it looks as though January might well be the time when the Scot breaks the bank. And it looks like the most crucial month in Moyes’s brief rein at the club.
