East Bengal fans have been hit with some sad news, as it has been revealed that the club might have to quit the AFC Cup due to a lack of funds needed for participation. In spite of their triumph in the 34th Federation Cup, East Bengal officials asked for financial help from their sponsor UB Group, and have also demanded their prize money from All India Football Federation (AIFF).

East Bengal are currently playing with three foreign players, Edeh Chidi, Uga Okpara and Penn Orji, while as per I-League rules, every club can have four. East Bengal coach Trevor James Morgan was reportedly angry with these developments, but club officials revealed to him that they did not have enough money to buy a fourth foreigner. In this situation of financial strain, the AFC Cup qualification has added extra pressure on the club’s officials.

East Bengal have also not received the 40 lakh prize money from the AIFF for ending runners-up in the last season’s I-League. In fact, East Bengal also have to get an additional 26 lakhs in prize money for winning the 34th Federation Cup. Club officials have requested the federation to solve this problem as quickly as possible, as an influx of cash might help the Red and Gold Brigade participate in the AFC Cup.
