Cesc Fabregas looks set to miss out on Spain’s mid-week friendly against Ecuador. According to ESPN, the Barcelona midfielder will pull out of the Spain squad after picking up an ankle injury during clubs tour of Malaysia.

Fabregas was on the receiving end of a heavy challenge with ten minutes of the match to go as Barcelona led Malaysia XI 3-1 on Saturday.

A statement on Barcelona’s official website said:

“Cesc Fabregas had a number of tests this morning after arriving back from Malaysia to measure the extent of the ankle injury he picked up in Saturday’s match.

“It has subsequently been confirmed that the player has sprained a ligament in his right ankle.

“Club doctors have contacted the Spanish FA to recommend that the player should not join the national squad for the friendly against Ecuador so that he can undergo treatment in Barcelona.”

Fabregas was linked by the press to Manchester United earlier in the summer but has since pledged his future to the Catalan club. He was one of five Barca players to be called up to the national team for the match against Ecuador.
