Pique set to stay at Barcelona until 2019

Amidst the disappointment of losing the La Liga title on the final day, the Blaugrana have been handed a boost barely a few days later. Spanish central defender Gerard Pique has committed his future to the club by signing a contract extension that will keep him at the club till 2019. According to the club website, Pique will sign his contract extension in a few days.

Having come through the club’s academy, the 27-year-old has grown into one of the most influential players in the current Barcelona setup which is set to see a massive overhaul with the appointment of former midfielder Luis Enrique as coach.

The Spanish international now follows Lionel Messi, who signed an improved contract with the Catalans just a day earlier. The club were hoping that the central defender, who has spent the vast majority of his career at Camp Now would renew his contract that looked set to expire at the end of next season.

Since his return to Barca in 2008, Pique has played over 250 games for the club and has won four La Liga titles and has won both the Copa del Rey twice and the Champions League twice. However, the current season ended in disappointment for the Catalans as they were knocked out of the Champions League in the quarter finals by Atletico Madrid, the same club they lost the league to and were beaten in the final of the Copa del Rey by Real Madrid.

Having just won the Supercopa de Espana this season, Gerardo Martino left the club at the end of the campaign. The Catalans will now be looking to start the new campaign afresh with the futures of their most influential defender and attacker safely secured and with a new manager at the helm.
