Its rarely seen that a game becomes a saviour for the environment but the 2014 FIFA World Cup has been very helpful to the State Government of Bahia, Brazil.
The government of Bahia had taken a pledge that the people of the state will plant 1,111 trees for every goal scored and the numbers till now have been very encouraging.
After the last game between the Netherlands and Costa Rica, The Salvador stadium has witnessed a total of 31 official goals plus the late goal scored by Karim Benzema against Switzerland that was ruled out. As per the calculations, the number of trees now stands at a total of 35,552.
The numbers could have been much higher had the match between Netherlands and Costa produced more goals considering they produced a total of 9 attempts on goal and the final score after 120 minutes of play was 0-0. The game was later decided on penalties with the Dutch winning the shootout 4-3.
