Chelsea had already qualified to the knockout stages and had already topped the group. Sporting Lisbon had 7 points and needed a draw to qualify for the knockout stages.

Jose Mourinho gave his fringe players a start at Stamford Bridge with Petr Cech, Mohammed Salah, Filipe Luis, Kurt Zouma, Andre Schurrle and John Obi Mikel starting.

The players did not disappoint as they dominated the match and defeated the side from Portugal 3-1. This win showed the bench strength available to Mourinho as they finished with 17 goals in the group stage – the most in this season’s Champions League campaign.

In the reverse fixture, Nemanja Matic’s looping header was the only difference between the two sides. This time, goals by Cesc Fabregas, Andre Schurrle and John Obi Mikel got them the three points. Jonathan Silva scored a consolation goal for the Portugese side.

Here are the highlights of the game:

Chelsea 1-0 Sporting Lisbon: Cesc Fabregas (pen) (8’)

Filipe Luis was brought down inside the box by Ricardo Esgaio after the Sporting defender was nut-megged by Luis.

Cesc Fabregas stepped up to take the penalty. The Spaniard made no mistake from the spot as he gave the Blues the lead after smashing the ball into the centre of the goal.

Chelsea 2-0 Sporting Lisbon: Andre Schurrle (16’)

Superb stuff from Schurrle and Matic in the build-up as Matic burst forward and found the German midfielder.

Schurrle turned and smashed a low shot past Rui Patricio from about 20 yards.

Chelsea 2-1 Sporting Lisbon: Jonathan Silva (50’)

Chelsea failed to clear Andre Carillo’s cross and Jonathan Silva was there to hand Sporting a lifeline. It was a very good finish from Silva as he chested the ball down and volleyed it into the bottom corner.

Chelsea 3-1 Sporting Lisbon: John Obi Mikel (56’)

Just when Sporting thought they were back in the game, they were pegged back by an unlikely source.

Cesc Fabregas‘ free-kick was flicked on by Gary Cahill and the ball found its way to the defensive midfielder a yard away from goal. Mikel did not make a mistake as he calmly put the ball into the back of the net to restore Chelsea’s two-goal cushion.

It was the Nigerian’s first goal in European competitions.
