Rumour: Inter Milan to make an audacious bid to sign Lionel Messi

Today’s ridiculous rumour of the day comes courtesy of Inter Milan president Erick Thohir. The Indonesian businessman showed that he has the big mouth to match his big wallet, by claiming to Republika Online that he would be open to making a move for Barcelona’s Lionel Messi.

Thohir took over the club in October last year and is approaching his first transfer window in charge of the club. Playing up his financial clout to the club’s supporters, the businessman said that no player is beyond the reach of the club in terms of transfers.

“Players like Messi can be bought,” said Thohir. “But only on the condition that the club’s finances are not affected.”

Given that Messi’s buyout clause is reported to stand at €250 million it’s probably a fair assumption that the clubs finances would be take a bit of a hit should they move for the Argentinian, whilst the prospect of Messi wanting to leave Barcelona seems so remote that his buyout clause is probably pretty meaningless anyway.

Thohir did come back down to earth with his next statement, admitting that it will be difficult for Inter to make any big signings in January.

“In January, though, it will be difficult to recruit new players because the window is so narrow and there’s only half a season left to play,” he said.

So Messi will have to wait then.

Messi has scored a goal every 77 minutes in league and Europe this season
