Kai Rooney, the son of English footballing icon Wayne Rooney was seen in Barbados sporting a Real Madrid kit before the Manchester Derby on Sunday. What’s more interesting is the name on the back of the shirt – it was none other than his father’s former team-mate from Manchester United, Cristiano Ronaldo.
While Wayne Rooney led his Manchester United side in a 0-0 draw in the derby against their neighbours Manchester City, the England captain’s wife Colleen and two sons – Kai and Klay – were away on a holiday in Barbados.
Kai has been in some spotlight even at a young age as he was seen signing autographs like his dad and accompanying the United captain onto the pitch as a mascot on a few occasions. On one of these times when Kai was a mascot in the Premier League he was noted sporting a temporary tattoo of Cristiano Ronaldo on his arm, so this isn’t the first occasion when he’s displayed his love for the Real Madrid star.
Wayne Rooney and Ronaldo formed quite a formidable partnership in attack during the Portuguese captain’s time in England when the duo were vital in the Red Devils’ capture of 3 Premier League titles, 1 FA Cup and a Champions League victory. They have carried on their friendship even after Ronaldo left for Spain to join Los Blancos despite what seemed like a spat between the two players after the incident between them in an England vs Portugal game when Ronaldo got Roooney sent off.
The now Real Madrid all-time top goalscorer recently appeared in a BBC documentary on Rooney as well. He spoke about the qualities Wayne displays on the pitch, as the Mirror reported saying, “The power of Wayne Rooney is his mentality and his strength - he never stops. He's a fantastic team player and he scores goals. I miss playing with him. Maybe in the future we will play together again.”
The same documentary also featured Rooney speaking about his sons Kai and Klay who are both keen football fans. Kai especially who seems to be leaning towards following in his father’s steps, albeit as a goalkeeper, though Wayne may want otherwise.
The little boy has long way to decide his future, footballing or otherwise, but he seems to be veering in one direction regarding his favourite player. It’s almost like the situation with Cristiano Ronaldo, whose son seems to be a fan of Lionel Messi and now Kai Rooney it appears is a Cristiano fan. Somewhere there must be a footballer’s spawn who’s aspiring to be Wayne Rooney.
