What is the story?

Barcelona’s official Twitter account has mocked UEFA’s request to vote for the Most Valuable Player of the week.

Barcelona’s Twitter account responded with a cheeky comment, "Come on, Champions League... are you serious?"

In case you didn’t know…

Barcelona put one foot in the Champions League final as they thumped Jürgen Klopp’s men 3-0 at the Camp Nou on Wednesday night, thanks to a sensational display from their talisman, Lionel Messi.

Barcelona skipper Lionel Messi was once again at his brutal best as he single-handedly destroyed Liverpool. Messi dribbled past several Liverpool players for fun and looked determined to make a difference from the start. Despite toying with the Liverpool players in the first half, Messi failed to put the ball into the back of the net during the half.

The Barcelona ace took the wind out of Liverpool’s sail after scoring Barcelona’s second goal in the second half from a lucky rebound after Suárez struck the crossbar. However, Messi’s second goal was unbelievable, the Argentine executed an outrageous 30-yard free-kick and put the final nail in Liverpool’s coffin.

With his brace against The Reds, Messi has now scored as many as 48 goals in all competitions this term. The five-time Ballon d’Or winner is also leading the goal scoring chart in Europe’s elite competition with 12 goals in just 9 games.

With his inch-perfect eighth free-kick of this season, Messi also became the first player to score 600 goals in the famous Blaugrana shirt.

The heart of the matter…

Recently, UEFA Champions League Twitter account posted a seemingly ridiculous question of who should be crowned as the player of the week on the basis of last Champions League matchday.

In response Barcelona took to Twitter and laughed at the Tweet with a caption of "Come on, Champions League... are you serious?"

Apart from Lionel Messi, Luis Suárez was also nominated for the player of the week. The other two were Frenkie de Jong and Donny van de Beek of Ajax.

What’s Next?

Barcelona, who are next up against Celta Vigo in the La Liga this weekend, will play against Liverpool in the return leg of their Champions League semi-final tie next week Tuesday.
