Paris Saint-Germain may have won the French title by a 12-point margin from Marseille, but they were pipped by their greatest rivals in terms of income from television in the 2012/13 season.

Sports daily L’Equipe reported on Friday that Marseille earned just under 48 million euros ($63.6m, £40.9m) in television income, with PSG earning 44.1 million euros and Lyon, who came third, earning just under 44 million.

That trio were a significant distance ahead of the next highest earners, Bordeaux, who collected 32.1 million euros.

Marseille beat PSG because of their better performances over the last five seasons, as well as the fact that, as France’s best supported club, their games are almost always broadcast live.

The figures show how far France’s top flight trails behind the English Premier League, which rakes in more money from television than any other in Europe.

Manchester United made £60.8 million (71.4 million euros, $94.7m) in TV income thanks to their Premier League title win.

Meanwhile, Spanish giants Barcelona and Real Madrid currently reportedly earn 140 million euros each from television thanks to the lack of a collective system for selling rights in La Liga.
