Reports: Real Madrid interested in signing 30-year-old superstar

Will Zidane get his man?

What’s the rumour?

Italian outlet Calciomercato is reporting that Real Madrid are interested to sign AC Milan defender Leonardo Bonucci this summer. They were in pursuit of the player last summer but he was signed by the Italian club in 2017.

In case you didn't know:

Bonucci is undoubtedly one of the best defenders in the world and is nearing a playing career of 15 years at the top flight. He was the backbone of Juventus for seven long seasons and won six consecutive league titles with the club.

He is also an integral part of the Italy national team and came second best to Spain at the UEFA Euro 2012. He has won many personal accolades as well and has made over 530 appearances for club and country.

The defender joined AC Milan in July 2017 on a five-year contract for a £37.8 million transfer fee. They will definitely demand a fee equal to or more than that if they decide to sell him.

The heart of the matter:

Real Madrid are set for a massive transfer overhaul this summer and Zidane wants to bring in a solid centre-back ahead of the next campaign. Bonucci was targeted last summer by the Los Blancos but he ended up in AC Milan. Madrid are ready to try their luck again this summer.

Raphael Varane has shown some inconsistency this season and Zidane wants to improve their defence in order to challenge on all fronts next season, following a meek title defence this term. The Italian is seen by the Frenchman as the perfect player to partner Sergio Ramos.

Rumour rating/probability - 6/10

Although no concrete interest can be confirmed, there are rumours circulating about the same. The report suggests that AC Milan is unlikely to sell their star asset but they may be forced to do so if a substantial offer comes in, to comply with the Financial Fair Play regulations.

Author’s take

It seems to be a difficult move to pull off, but Madrid are ready to spend big this summer and may fix their eyes on the Italian, who will instantly add more steel to their defence. AC Milan is likely to do everything they can to keep hold of their star player and the potential transfer could prove to be a huge loss for the Rossoneri.
