Red or Blue -- Which part of Manchester needs RVP the most?

It’s probably the biggest transfer saga of the summer season and after Juventus pulled out it’s a two way fight between Manchester United and Manchester City for the signature of Robin Van Persie, last season’s league top scorer. Instead of talking about where he might go we will look at which club wants him more.

Manchester City

Roberto Mancini has himself confessed his admiration for the Dutchman and is keen to add another world class player already to their expensively assembled squad. At the moment Manchester City have 4 first team strikers in the form of Balotelli, Tevez, Dzeko and Aguero all of them are truly great players and all did their part in helping their team capture their first Premier League trophy last season. Although RVP is a truly great striker, I don’t see the point in City pursuing him because already they have three players who are competing for the striker position as Mancini uses the 4-2-3-1 formation where there is space for only one striker which can be filled by either Dzeko, Balotelli and Aguero. I’m leaving out Tevez because his future at the Etihad is uncertain and money spent on him could be spent elsewhere to strengthen the squad elsewhere but then there is that argument that RVP would provide another dimension to City next year as they head out to defend their title with his deadly instincts in the box and one-on-one while his long shots and free kicks are absolutely delightful, a department where Man City lacks from their current crop of players also he gets those important goals when you need them. Now we look at United.

Manchester United

After losing the title in the final minute of last season, United are splashing the cash this season to get the title back to the red half of Manchester and have made Van Persie a priority and SAF has already told that they have made a bid for him. At the moment there are three strikers at the club competing for first place Rooney, Hernandez and Welbeck and play in the 4-4-1-1 formation in which Rooney occupies the CF role where he picks the ball up deep and then attacks leaving Welbeck and Hernandez to finish of the attacks. Although both of them are bright prospects, they lack that cutting edge when finishing which Van Persie provides and he doesn’t seem to miss his chance to score, something which United have lacked for some time. Also his height provides a good advantage to United because of their style of play as they provide a lot of crosses and his headers would provide many goals too as United play quick counter attacking football; he would be a perfect billing as a target man to finish of the attacks. If RVP and Rooney can complement each other, they can create havoc at home and abroad but the attack isn’t the main problem for United in the past seasons; it’s their midfield and creativity that have caused them to become somewhat of a fading power.

Verdict: In my opinion United need Van Persie more then City right now because of their lack in depth of squad .
