Reports: Arsenal bid for Yohan Cabaye but Newcastle promptly reject it

Newcastle United v Stoke City - Premier League

Yohan Cabaye

Sources from the Sky network have revealed that Arsenal have submitted an undisclose £10m bid for Newcastle’s highly-rated French midfielder Yohan Cabaye.

Although full details of the latest Arsenal foray into their so far unsuccessful summer transfer market are still sketchy, Sportsmail understands that the Magpies have rejected the bid, and the player is expected to start against Manchester City on Monday night.

Arsene Wenger is a known admirer of the French international and the under-fire French manager is desperate to do some meaningful business within the next few days after coming under severe fan pressure to spend on new recruits following their 1-3 opening day Barclays Premier League home loss to Aston Villa.

Yaya Sanogo remains the only signing this summer after failed attempts to buy Gonzalo Higuain, Luiz Gustavo and Luis Suarez. With injuries to Alex-Oxlade Chamberlain, Mikael Arteta, Aaron Ramsey and Tomas Rosicky set to deplete the Gunners further, Wenger is in urgent need for quality midfield reinforcements.

Cabaye’s future with Newcastle United has been under scrutiny for the past few months with a host of top European clubs like PSG, Manchester United and expensively-assembled Monaco showing their desire to sign the 27-year old.

The industrious box-to-box midfielder joined Newcastle from Lille in the summer of 2011 and helped Alan Pardew’s side to finish fifth in the Premier League that season.

Last season, Cabaye could not fulfill his full potential due to injury and Newcastle’s poor display in the 2012-13 season was partly due to the player’s absence from many games.

According to Sky Sports, PSG boss Laurent Blanc remained diplomatic when asked about his interest in the playmaker, who he managed during France’s Euro 2012 campaign, but did say that he “loves” the player.
