Reports: Ashley Cole set to sign for AS Roma after travelling to meet officials in Canada

Former Arsenal, Chelsea and England defender Ashley Cole is on his way to joining Serie A giants AS Roma as he travels to Canada to meet with officials, according to journalist, Gianluca Di Marzio.

Cole, 33, was released by Chelsea at the end of the season when his contract expired. He found it difficult to play many games as his manager Jose Mourinho preferred the Spaniard Cesar Azpilicueta at left-back despite his natural position being on the opposite side of the defence.

The SPanish full-back won the Player of the Year award at Chelsea and with Mourinho targeting Filipe Luis of Atletico Madrid, Ashley Cole had little other choice than to accept his fate and start looking for a new club.

Liverpool, Arsenal and Real Madrid as well as others have all been linked with Cole but it seems that Roma in Serie A will be his destination. According to Di Marzio, the Englishman has travelled to Canada and will speak with club officials ahead of finalising the transfer.

Cole will then go ahead with a medical once talks are complete and sign the contract, making the move abroad after spending his entire career to date in England with Arsenal and then Chelsea.
