Riyad Mahrez has revealed that he was unaware of Leicester City when the Foxes tried to sign him. The Algerian midfielder assumed that the Premier League favourites were a Rugby team, although Mahrez is certainly happy at the turn of events that have left him arguably the best player playing for the best team in the Premier League.
Mahrez was speaking in the April issue of FourFourTwo magazine, and revealed his ignorance about the club that has ensured his fame, saying “ I didn't know Leicester. In France we didn't really [know them] because they were in the Championship. I thought they were a rugby club.”

Mahrez’s confusion was understandable, as his formative years in football were spent in French side Le Havre, a nation that has an obsession with Rugby. In addition, Leicester’s Rugby side, the ‘Leicester Tigers’ are officially called ‘Leicester Football Club’, which is what the Algerian international probably searched for when researching his suitors, who are coincidentally the most successful English side in Rugby.
However, Mahrez did eventually sign with the Foxes in the January of 2104, and did not come to regret the move a single bit, saying “I was like: 'I don't know...' But then I came here to see the facilities and they were good. I do not regret signing for them, it's the best club I've ever been at.”
Foxes can win Premier League
Mahrez has been in sparkling form for Leicester City this season, as the Algerian has scored 14 goals and assisted 12 goals in the Premier League, which puts him in contention for the Player of the Year award, one that he is favourite to win.
Mahrez’s form, coupled with Jamie Vardy’s free-scoring run has fired the Foxes to the top of the Premier League table, as they are on 57 points, a 3 point lead over Tottenham Hotspur. With many labelling Leicester City the favourites for the title after the latest round of fixtures, Mahrez seems to share that sentiment.
The forward spoke about the importance of confidence in Leicester gaining an unprecedented Premier League title, saying “This is Leicester's best season ever and we just need to keep going. We have the quality and we have the confidence, then when you start winning games you gain even more confidence. That's how football goes.”
