Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has hinted that he will attempt to sign Schalke midfielder Julian Draxler in the summer after failing to secure a deal for the German international in the January transfer window, according to The Metro.

The North Londoners were strongly linked with the 20 year-old and had been expected to finalise a deal for the youngster before Friday’s deadline. However, an agreement between the two clubs could not be reached, with a sticking point seemingly the fee that Schalke could demand for Draxler.

Draxler is one of Europe’s most coveted talents and it is widely believed that a host of European heavyweights will be interested in his signature in the summer, with Bundesliga giants Bayern Munich amongst those tipped to make an offer. Arsenal are likely to have missed their chance if a bidding war for his services ensues, but Wenger has insisted that Arsenal will return with a new bid.

‘”We are not against spending, but at the moment we are focused on the second part of the season, and at the end of the season we will see what we will do.

“You have announced a lot of transfers in your papers that have not happened, in many places, that means it is not as easy as it looks, even with money, to buy the right players in that period,” he declared.

Having missed out on the marquee signing many fans craved in January, Wenger may well need to spend big in the summer, especially if his side have failed to end their trophy drought.

Draxler has provided 4 assists this season while Arsenal’s Santi Cazorla and Jack Wilshere have three each.
