Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho wants to sign Everton midfielder Ross Barkley, should Juan Mata complete his transfer to Manchester United, according to the Daily Star.

The Spaniard is due to complete a medical with the reigning champions today and a reported £37 million deal set to be sealed later in the week.

However, reports now suggest that Mourinho is willing to let the midfielder leave Stamford Bridge as part of a long term plan to capture highly rated England international Barkley.

The 20-year-old has flourished under Roberto Martinez’s stewardship this season and the Toffees are currently attempting to negotiate an extension and improved terms to his current deal that expires in 2016.

Several European heavyweights are sure to be interested in the youngster’s signature, who is currently sidelined with a toe injury.

But despite the fact Barkley looks likely to sign Everton’s new deal, Chelsea will not be disheartened and are prepared to make a huge bid in the summer for his services.

With Chelsea’s current stock of English players approaching the twilight of their careers the Portuguese boss knows new blood is needed and is confident Barkley’s head will be turned by the promise of Champions League football.

Ross Barkley has won average of 63% of his duels this season.
