Rumour: Real Madrid give up on Luis Suarez

Spanish giants Real Madrid have withdrawn their long-standing interest in Liverpool striker Luis Suarez; conceding that they no longer can afford the Uruguayan.

The Bernabeu outfit were monitoring Suarez’s situation closely ever since the mercurial striker publicly stated his desire to leave Anfield in the summer.

The Reds rejected a number of bids from English giants Arsenal for Suarez, including the much maligned £40,00,001 bid in the summer. Los Blancos were busy finalizing the world record transfer of Gareth Bale from Spurs at the time and as such were not able to focus on Suarez, who was forced to remain at Anfield, by the club’s American owners the Fenway Sports Group and honour his long-term contract with Liverpool.

Madrid were expected to comeback with a move for the super striker in January, especially as he wasn’t cup-tied in Europe and was eligible to play for the Spanish giants in UEFA Champions League.

Unexpectedly, Liverpool in the meanwhile have become title contenders if not outright league leaders; and Suarez has recently put pen to paper on a new bumper 4-year contract with a reported buy-out clause of a whooping £100 million, way more than what Madrid paid for Gareth Bale (i.e £86 million).

The 26-year-old striker is also said to be happy with life on Merseyside, and seeing both himself, and perhaps more importantly the team too, progressing under Rodgers’s astute leadership as the club look set to challenge for the title this season.

This indicates that Madrid don’t have the slightest chance to raise the funds necessary to bring Suarez to Bernabeu; even if he himself was pushing for a move.

Ruling out that, Los Blancos will not return for Suarez in the summer is foolish at best, specially if Liverpool do fail to qualify for next season’s Champions League.
