U-19 I-League: United SC win it late over Mohun Bagan 2-1

United SC Under-19 took on the Mohun Bagan AC Juniors in their opening encounter of the Under-19 I-League 2014/15 at their own backyard at the Kalyani Stadium today. It was a rather flat initial 45 minutes with the visitors chasing hard taking advantage to their physic. United SC also showed commitment and restricted Mohun Bagan in the midfield region thus both teams preferred a defence first strategy.

Subhankar Dey of United SC missed on an easy one to one situation in the 31st minute while Mohun Bagan also had a chance to score from a corner in the 40th minute. However, United SC looked a changed side in the second half when they started their passing football and took control of the match. When things looked shaping up for United SC, the mishap occurred in the 59th minute when their striker Biswajit Sardar sustained a 'monkey bite' which not only forced him to leave the field but also resulted in lapse in concentration among his team-mates.

Soon Mohun Bagan capitalized on the situation and scored through Rohit Negi in the 66th minutes. United SC immediately bounced back the next minute when they equalised through their skipper Babun Das who scored an outstanding goal with a flying volley from the top of the box.Now United SC were in-charge and they created two more chances through their right-winger Jagannath Oraon but could not convert in absence of a genuine striker. However, when everyone was sure of a point sharing, the football God had something else in mind. It was in the 94th minute when United SC scored again though their super-sub Sandip Bhattacharjee who was spot on to guide the venomnous cross of Jagannath Oraon which found the back of the net. Sandip, a product of the United SC Youth Development Program was adjudged 'Best Player of the Tournament' in 2011 at the Tehran Under-14 Asian Youth Festival wearing national colours.

United SC's next match is scheduled for December 18, 2014 against Mohammedan Sporting Club at Rajpur Ground, Kamalgachi.
