Manchester United’s £59.7 million signing Angel Di Maria just showed a glimpse of why exactly the English club paid that huge sum to Real Madrid. He finished the game against QPR with a goal and an assist and was a constant threat taking on opposition defenders at ever opportunity he got.
He opened the scoring off a freekick in the 24th minute in what looked more like a cross which caught goalkeeper Robert Green off guard.
Interestingly another Manchester United no. 7, Cristiano Ronaldo, a former teammate of Di Maria, had scored a quite similar goal to get off the mark for Manchester United in November 2003. A freekick. Meant to be cross. Went in directly.
While this is a mere coincidence, if the new No. 7 has anywhere close to the career Ronaldo had at the club the fans could see some success they are so used to and can put the Moyes fiasco last season behind them.
