Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has backed midfielder Mesut Ozil to further improve on the form that he has shown during his opening three months at the club. Ozil started his Arsenal career with a flurry of assists, but has seen his form tail off in recent weeks. However Wenger pointed to the German international’s hurried pre season preparation and age as reasons to expect the midfielders form to improve – a prospect that is sure to excite Arsenal fans.

“First of all he is a hugely talented player”, said Wenger. “He just arrived here three months ago and overall did not have the best of preparations for the league.

“He is a young player, he is 25 years old, so of course there is a lot of room for improvement for him. “

Wenger also moved to play down Ozil’s status as the clubs record signing and newest talisman, insisting that the former Real Madrid man doesn’t have any pressure on him above that expected of other players.

“We have plenty of players who can take the ball and play you know because he plays in the central part of the pitch the ball goes through him. But we don’t put any special responsibility on him. Maybe he feels a bit more pressure to do that. We just want the game to be played like we see it and do not put any special responsibility on him.”

Mesut Ozil has made the most key passes for Arsenal this season (21).
