What if Falcao joined Chelsea?

Falcao of Atletico Madrid celebrates following their UEFA Super Cup triumph over Chelsea.

Radamel Falcao is arguably the most talked about player in the world football right now. Both in form and demand, reports suggest Chelsea have been chasing the Colombian international since the summer transfer window. A classy hat-trick against the current Champions of Europe and some brilliant displays (both in the international and club) seem to have convinced Roman Abramovich to make an official bid, come the new year. One cannot guarantee how true the reports are, but if the 5ft 10in striker makes a move to the West London outfit, it would make for a huge shake-up.

1. The return of last year’s Torres:

Since his big money move from Liverpool, Fernando Torres hasn’t quite been able to justify his ?50 million price tag. Having said that, one has to point out that he used to live in the shadows of a certain Didier Drogba. He had lost confidence and that is visible during the matches. But this season has been different. He has looked sharp and willing to make an effort. Having already scored 6 goals this season, Torres has hinted that he isn’t too far from the form that made the Chelsea owner splash so much cash over him. Now if Falcao was to join Chelsea during the next transfer window, it would mean there is an insecurity for Torres. A bad run of form, even for a couple of matches would see him get benched and probably the confidence level would return to what it was in the previous season. In short, Chelsea’s gain ( in the service of Falcao) would be Torres’s loss.

2. Chelsea: too hot to handle?

With Juan Mata, Eden Hazard and Oscar in midfield behind the striker, Roberto Di Matteo couldn’t have asked for more help from his owner. These three players are capable of creating some wonderful chances and providing a perfect through-ball for the striker. Now imagine such a talented midfield, led by an inch perfect striker in Falcao upfront. This would create havoc in the opposition defense and teams would fear Chelsea. Another thing that is bound to happen is that Chelsea will shake off their “park the bus” tag and we would see attractive and more attacking football from them.

3. A victim of the ‘Chelsea Curse’?

In the past, a few players have had bad experiences in Chelsea. These few players were very big names prior to their signing for Chelsea. Andriy Shevchenko, for example was one of the best striker in the world when he was playing for AC Milan. He had scored 127 goals in 208 appearances for the Italian club but could only manage a mere 9 goals in his 48 first team appearances for the blues. Another quite evident example is of course, Torres. From a third place in the Ballon d’or to a substitute in the Chelsea line-up; the progress graph has fallen exponentially since his move to London. Going by the stats, a whooping 65 goals for the Merseyside club in 102 appearance and then 18 goals in 82 appearances does tell us that there is something with Chelsea and big named players.

Fans of Radamel Falcao can just hope that if he does decide to play for Chelsea, he doesn’t let anything of this sort happen to him.
