The Nvidia RTX Remix is built to provide modders with an easy way to make their own RTX remasters of classic games. Many didn't render the shadows cast by every light, so they look bland compared to the new generation of games. However, the Nvidia RTX Remix will convert those classic titles' light sources to work with ray tracing, creating soft and realistic shadows.

In this article, we'll walk you through the workflow of using Nvidia RTX Remix to mod ray-tracing in games.

Nvidia RTX Remix to mod ray-tracing in games: Step-by-step guide

The Nvidia RTX Remix features powerful tools to explore the game world and inspect the title to determine which objects might need some work. You can observe lighting and shadows in isolation to implement ray tracing in those desired areas within a few steps.

Capture tool:

  • First, press the capture button in-game. Then, the Remix runtime will take a snapshot of everything around you, including the textures, geometry, and lights, and convert those into the Universal Scene Description format (USD).
  • Then open the USD file in the Remix application. It is perfect for turning a large library of DirectX 8 and 9 titles into sandboxes to customize.

AI texture tools:

  • Use the mesh mode feature to recognize objects with lower resolution.
  • Observe the game and identify which objects or areas need ray-tracing upgrades.
  • Next, utilize Remix's AI texture tools to scan every asset and upgrade the textures by up to 4X.
  • The AI tools look at the single-color textures that make up objects in modeling and understand what material the object is supposed to be made of.
  • It constructs roughness and normal maps to model that material accurately.

This retexturing feature adds details to the objects and makes them react much more realistically to light. With RTX 40 series GPUs, the additional tensor cores make these AI tools run even faster.

Lights and shadows:

Using Nvidia RTX Remix, you can create new lights and change their placement, color, and intensity. Furthermore, you can add emissive maps and create dynamic lights by attaching them to movable meshes.

Custom tools:

Nvidia RTX Remix is built on Nvidia Omniverse, so modders can leverage the entire Omniverse platform to reimagine any asset. That includes Omniverse-connected game development apps like Autodesk Maya, Adobe Substance, and Photoshop.

When customizing USD files in Omniverse, they're live synced, so you can modify assets and conveniently see the changes live in Nvidia RTX Remix. Additionally, you can use the platform's live collaborative abilities to work with another moderator in a scene in real time.

Exporting:

When the customizations are complete, you can export the full RTX mod and see it in action. The exported mod consists of all the USD files you've changed and the RTX remix runtime.

It will switch out the original game assets in real-time, all while adding path-traced rendering powered by RTX for beautiful graphics, DLSS 3 to boost frame rates, and reflex to improve responsiveness in the game. All you have to do is launch the game and start playing.

Additional features:

The RTX Remix runtime will let you customize your experience during gameplay with its overlay.

  • Globally adjust the parameterization of materials on the fly.
  • Tweak the physical volumetric fog.
  • Change the look of the game by increasing the number of light bounces.
  • Add post-processing effects like motion blur, bloom, and tone mapping.
