DP World Tour offers full status for PGA Tour players ranked between 126-200 to fend off interest from LIV Golf

DP World Tour is making changes to fend off LIV Golf

The DP World Tour is making a big change. Any PGA Tour players who fall between numbers 126 and 200 on the FedEx Cup points list are at risk of losing their status on the tour. If they do, they may seek alternative ways to continue earning money for their services.

That may lead them to consider LIV Golf, where many golfers who weren't doing so well on Tour went to earn more money. It's been a vital part of LIV's growth, but the DP World Tour is offering those aforementioned ranked players full membership on their tour.

This provides a different option for those who might consider leaving for LIV if they can't stay on the PGA Tour. Players who are in that ranked area might feel like they can't make it on the Tour and look for something a little easier.

Combine that fact with what LIV Golf offers people to sign on, and how much they make for middling performances on the circuit, it's easy to see why someone in that spot might consider a defection.

The DP World Tour would like to see that change, though. Instead of LIV Golf being the direct alternative, they want to be considered the next step. It's a prominent world golf tour, and they would like to keep the competition at bay as best as they can.

DP World Tour vs. LIV Golf rages on

DP World Tour and LIV have had a contentious relationship since the beginning, partly due to LIV's poaching of many players who could have been or were on the World Tour. This is the latest in an ever-growing saga between these two competing tours.

The DP World Tour also offers players a chance to pretty easily get back on the PGA Tour, which is something LIV currently does not have. Adrian Meronk is close to ascending to PGA after his latest DP win, and he said:

“To win this tournament is very special. Super special. The weather was not very helpful and I didn’t get off to a hot start. But I stayed positive. I knew I had the game and stayed focused until the last putt “I hope so. I’m just glad that all the talk about it is over. I can just focus on my game and keep going forward. Whoever doubted me, I hope I can prove them wrong.”

There are a lot of reasons to consider the DP World Tour over LIV Golf, and the tour has just added another. It remains to be seen exactly how these two tours will coexist once the PIF/PGA Tour merger is finalized and takes effect.

The PGA Tour had a tough relationship with LIV, once again due to the poaching of players like Phil Mickelson, Brooks Koepka, Cameron Smith, and Dustin Johnson. Nevertheless, they were able to find a path forward with the merger.

Will the same be true of the DP World Tour? Former players Ian Poulter, Lee Westwood, and others are pretty unhappy with them, so it could be interesting to watch.
