Frankie Capan III fired a 13-under 58 in the opening round of the Korn Ferry Tour’s Veritex Bank Championship, registering his name in the record books. His Thursday round at the Texas Rangers Golf Club in Arlington, Texas, helped him surpass the four-year-old course record set by Scottie Scheffler.

Capan began with four back-to-back birdies on holes 2 to 5 before making an eagle on the ninth. On the back nine, he sank seven straight birdies to finish the historic round.

This is the second-lowest score on the Korn Ferry Tour. Another birdie would have helped him equal the 57 posted by Cristobal Del Solar at the Astara Golf Championship earlier this year.

During the post-round interview on Thursday, Capan reflected on his round. He said, as per the PGA Tour:

"When someone said it was for 58, I was excited because I know Scottie Scheffler shot 59, so whenever you can beat that guy, especially nowadays, I mean, you've got to take advantage."

Scheffler had set the course record in 2020 when he was playing a round with his friends during the COVID pandemic.

Stephan Jaeger Jim Furyk (PGA Tour), Alex del Rey (Challenge Tour), Ryo Ishikawa (Japan Tour), S.H. Kim (Japan Tour) and Jason Bohn (Canadian Tour) are the other names to have posted a 58. Bryson DeChambeau shot 58 during the LIV Golf Bedminster last year.

Besides Cristobal del Solar, only David Carey has shot 57. He had achieved this on the Alps Tour.
