A lot of us know of the sport, have seen the fights on TV, can name a few notable fighters but not many know about MMA Awards or other titles won by the people behind UFC. The World MMA awards are awards presented by Fighters Only magazine to honor exceptional performance in the various fields of Mixed Martial Arts. Since it’s inception in 2008, the World MMA winners are chosen through online voting and the awards have 21 categories.The categories range from ‘The Charles ‘Mask’ Lewis Fighter of the Year’ to ‘MMA journalist of the year’ honoring everyone who have shown exceptional work regarding mixed martial arts.
For the year 2013, the Charles ‘Mask’ Lewis Fighter of the year award was won by Chris Weidman who burst into the MMA scene since a few years back and has been drawing a lot of attention through his wins and impressive record. In the female category, the Female Fighter of the Year award went to Ronda ‘Rowdy’ Rousey, who has won this award, back to back for 2 years now. The Breakthrough Fighter of the Year went to Travis Browne, who grew famous after delivering his Superman punch KO against Stefan Struve.

There is also a category for the best fighter from outside of the Americas labeled’ International Fighter of the Year’ and for 2013, it went to the Swedish Mauler, Alexander Gustafsson. He also won the award for Fight of the Year for 2013, when his fight against Jon Jones was voted as the winner. Along with these awards, there were others that were awarded for performances shown such as Knockout of the Year, Submission of the Year, Comeback of the Year and so on.
The Coaches, Gyms and teams were also given awards to commemorate all the hard work put in by them. The Shawn Tomphkins Coach of the Year went to Duane Ludwig and the Gym of the Year went to Team Alpha Male.
The Fighters Only Awards have grown to be recognized throughout the industry by fans and fighters alike as the Oscars of the sport. Competition for statues every year, just like the fights, grows fiercer and the ceremonies get more glamorous and star-studded than the year before.
