Trevor Lawrence was once one of the most highly touted prospects in recent memory. Now he's slated to become one of the highest-paid quarterbacks in the league. According to a report, the Jacksonville Jaguars are potentially going to extend him with a $50 million salary.

There are currently five quarterbacks in that salary range, and the expectation is that Lawrence will join them. He is currently in talks with the Jaguars regarding an extension before the 2021 NFL draft pick reaches free agency.

This is the final year of his rookie contract, and while he hasn't played quite up to the level of hype he had as a prospect, Jacksonville believes in him. The team and Lawrence himself believe his best play is ahead of him, and they want to lock him up before he gets there.

Last month, Lawrence said, via CBS Sports:

"I'd love to, obviously, be a Jag for as long as possible. We love it here and I love where we're headed as an organization and feel like I'm just getting better every year. My best ball is definitely ahead of me. So, from that standpoint, obviously, yeah, that would be great."

Lawrence rebounded from a dismal rookie season to morph into a top young quarterback in the NFL. Pretty soon, he'll be paid like one. He will reportedly be paid like Jalen Hurts, Joe Burrow, Lamar Jackson, Jared Goff and Justin Herbert.

Jaguars all in on helping Trevor Lawrence

After their attempts to surround Trevor Lawrence with elite talent largely failed, the Jacksonville Jaguars are trying once again to give him the tools he needs to succeed.

They signed Gabe Davis in free agency before trading down and landing Brian Thomas Jr. in the first round of the NFL draft. Then in the fourth round, they selected Javon Foster to help protect Lawrence. For the first time, Lawrence dealt with injuries last season.

The team also added Keilan Robinson to their backfield in the fifth round. He will pair with Travis Etienne and hopefully take some of the pressure off Lawrence in 2024.
